INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 1: PROPOSAL
05.02.2024 - 23.02.2024 (Week 1 - Week 3)

Requirements:
The general theme is "Cultural Sensitivity in Design". We are required to study a cultural phenomenon, or a particular subculture that is perceived as 'sensitive'. We have to convey this cultural aspect without altering the actual facts but within a presentable interpretation and adaptation that raises awareness from the viewers. Each idea is to be supported by a short rationale.  We have to conduct visual research to help expand our idea generation.

In the end on this task, we will have to submit a PowerPoint presentation of our proposal that contains:
  • 200-word write-up defining and interpreting the theme in relation to the chosen cultural elements.
  • Citation is necessary as evidence to the research.
  • A minimum of 3 preliminary ideas in detailed sketches, each with individual rationale.
  • Visual references (visuals that inspire/influence those ideas).
  • Reference list

This is a group assignment, my group consists of five people, namely Amirah Akbar Ali, Adrianna Sofea, Gunn Joey, Ameera Rihana and me. To decide our proposal topics, our group leader Amirah have set up a meeting and ask us for our ideas. Everyone has come up with some ideas:
  • Amirah: Nudity contemporary art in Japan
  • Adrianna: Japanese ceramics
  • Joey: Japanese sports (Sumo)
  • Ameera: Flower arranging (Ikebana)
  • Tan Sin Mi: Traditional kimono/Geisha
After considering our itinerary and the places we might plan to go in Japan, we shortlisted to 3 choices from all the topics. Then we have done a poll in WhatsApp, and the topic with the most votes is Geisha Culture in Japan.

PROJECT 2: FIELD STUDY
26.02.2024 - 8.03.2024 (Week 4 - Week 5)

Requirements:
We are required to collect visual, oral, textual and tactile artefacts that would be part of their research materials for the ideation in Project 1 (proposal). All collected artefacts and materials must be recorded, kept and documented, accompanied by necessary information such as the type of artefact and material, its purpose, its symbolism, its cultural / historical background, and more, depending on the kind of artefact and material.

FINAL PROJECT & PORTFOLIO
11.03.2024 - 29.03.2024 (Week 6 - Week 7)

Requirements:
Utilising the data collected from the research trip, we are to produce visual design outcomes that reflect our interpretation and definition of " Framing ", bearing in mind to consider cultural and aesthetic aspects, balanced with our design knowledge. Various directions and approaches can be engaged in, such as experimental design/art with the use of manual/digital or combination of both media.

After discussion, we decided that each member of the group would design a makeup box and make a prototype. After getting feedback from lecturer, we will choose one the design ideas as the final product of our research.

Idea Exploration:

In the end, we chose Adrianna's design as our final product.

REFLECTION
In this module, I gained many new experiences, such as my first group work, my first trip to Japan, and my first field trip abroad. When I learned about this study tour to Japan, I immediately decided to participate. The first reason was because I had wanted to go to Japan for a long time, and the second reason was because I thought this study tour was very interesting. I had never tried studying and traveling abroad with a large class of classmates. I have always been very interested in exploring Japan. Before this module, I had been browsing various information related to Japanese culture and traditions, so I think this field trip is very worthwhile. In group work, it is very important to cooperate with each other. My group members are all very responsible and careful people. All our tasks were completed very smoothly. This is thanks to the efforts of all of us. I am very grateful to my group members. In addition, I also learned more knowledge related to product design. I usually like to do handwork, so I think this task is not complicated. I also learned more about intercultural knowledge. All cultures are handed down from the older generations. It is because of the maintenance of each generation that we can see the previous culture and art across time. We who are born in the new generation should also continue to maintain the inheritance of culture so that our descendants can also see these classical things too.
